Empty grocery stores happen due to supply interruptions
Prepper Outreach Contest Submission
Seven years ago my husband and I moved to the Big Island of Hawaii. We had both spent the majority of our lives on the mainland and were used to the convenience of living there. One day, I went down the yogurt aisle and found it void of yogurt. When I asked the cashier about it she said that the yogurt was expected to arrive in a few days. The Big Island depends heavily on shipments coming into its harbor. There are so many things that can cause disruption to the island… tsunamis, earthquakes, hurricanes, flash flooding, wild fires, volcanic eruptions, and those are just the natural disasters!
We started storing away food, supplies, and other things needed for survival. But right now our biggest focus is storing away skills. Years ago the locals were not as dependent on the harbors for survival. We have been working to develop skills so we can live off the land. From growing our own food and saving seeds, to processing my own coconut oil and coconut flour. My next project is gathering kiawe pods and grinding them into flour. Not only have we gained confidence in our ability to use the food the island provides, but we have also tried many new recipes that we love!
