Survivor From the Big Island

Seven years ago my husband and I moved to the Big Island of Hawaii. We had both spent the majority  of our lives on the mainland and were used to the convenience of living there.  One day, I went down the yogurt aisle and found it void of yogurt. When I asked the cashier about it she said that the yogurt was expected to arrive in a few days. The Big Island depends heavily on shipments coming into its harbor. There are so many things that can cause disruption to the island... tsunamis, earthquakes, hurricanes, flash flooding, wild fires, volcanic eruptions, and those are just the natural disasters!

We started storing away food, supplies, and other things needed for survival. But right now our biggest focus is storing away skills. Years ago the locals were not as dependent on the harbors for survival. We have been working to develop skills so we can live off the land. From growing our own food and saving seeds, to processing my own coconut oil and coconut flour.  My next project is gathering kiawe pods and grinding them into flour. Not only have we gained confidence in our ability to use the food the island provides, but we have also tried many new recipes that we love!

Love this one!

Voting again

and again

4th vote :)

And my last one :)

Worthy of my vote!!

Interesting!

What a challenge it must be to have to rely so much on imports in order to survive life in the islands. I think we who are in the states forget what it is life for you there as we go to the grocery store and everything magically appears on the shelves. Good on you for taking the time to not only start storing all of the food in preparation for whatever may come your way, but also for taking your natural resources and finding ways to make them work for you in every day living as well! Keep up the good work!

I think that it is wonderful that you have found a way to survive off of the natural resource that are available to you. Back to the basics, and I love it. It's hard to break the cycle when you have been brought having everything at your fingertips.

You are amazing! WTG for being so self reliant!

I love this!

Such a great example!

You motivate me to do more with our ER preparedness!

Keep it up!!!! :)

Have tasted her Coconut oil and it is fantastic. Better than I buy in the health food store.

She makes a great coconut milk from the fresh coconuts. Turning into a real pro.

I didn't even know you could make coconut flour until she did it and baked bread

Good example to the rest of us here . I need to be more self sufficient.

She has a beautiful garden with tons of vegetables and adding more fruit trees all the time. Truly a green thumb person but then I know she has done the research to make it happen.

Go self reliability.

Happy to help.

And number three.

Four......

.......and five.

Self-reliance is something that has gone by the wayside. We need to get back to teaching our children what it really means. You, clearly, are doing just that. Kudos to you!!

I'm interested in this Kiawe pod flour--with so many people forced to eat gluten free diets, I'm wondering if this is a great alternative.

When are you going to conduct a workshop to share with others what you have learned?

Can you share a sample with me of something you have made coconut flour with? I've never had that.

Love it.

Great ideas.

I had no idea all that could be done!

You're amazing!

I wish I could be more like you in being prepared!

I love this!

This is so cool! You just amazing me!

I hope you win!

I didn't know you could make coconut flour! That sounds delicious!

Being able to use different sources of food that grow around you is a great way to be prepared for anything that could happen.

I used to live on the big island and that thought always scared me a bit. I never realized until just recently that you could make your own coconut oil. That is amazing.

Huh. I never thought about "storing skills". I guess that falls into self preparation. But you never really think about that--you only think about storing away physical things. Cool insight.
