The Ripple Effect of a Persistent Husband

Okay…..My eyes are open

I have to start out by saying I am a prepper because of my lovely husband. He is that guy that walks around with a “tactical” backpack at ALL times so that he has everything he needs in an emergency from a first aid kit to fix his daughters boo boos to water filtration and fire starters just in case.

In the beginning I thought he was a little crazy; he kept saying that he wants to be prepared just in case anything happens and kept telling me he believes things are going quite wrong in the world and we need to be prepared for it.

A Prepping Way of Life

I grew up on a farm in the middle of now where Iowa, my Mom made a trip to the big Warehouse Supper market once ever 3 - 4 months were we would proceed to stock up on supplies.  It was just a way of life.
My husband grew up learning to be a survivalist - how to do things the old fashioned way...His Dad believed that if you wanted to build a barn...you go cut down the tree and hand hew the lumber for building...it was just a way of life.

From Single Mom of 9 to "Super Prepper"

Since I was a young woman in the late 70’s I have been intrigued with “Self Sufficiency”. There were Mother Earth News magazines, a few books on the market and 1 uninteresting book on food storage, I was able to use for resources. During this period and the following recession in the 80’s, I wanted to become a back to lander  I attempted to learn as many skills as I could.

Where is God in "Self"-Reliance?

A Place of Refuge

We moved to our home on 20 acres about 20 years ago. We moved simply because we wanted out of the city, but as I walked around our property on that first day, something spoke to my heart and I “felt” that someday this place would be a refuge.  15 years later, that memory came back to me.  All of a sudden I felt an urgency to prepare.  I wasn’t exactly sure for what, but I knew that I needed to be ready for a melt down of some sort.  For the last 4-5 years I’ve felt as if I were caught up in a whirlwind!  So many things to learn, so much to do!

Moving Forward to the Past

Okay, so here’s the truth...up until three years ago…no, not so far back….okay, eighteen months ago…it never occurred to me that there was ever any other way to procure a loaf of bread other than to hop in the car, drive seven miles to the nearest grocery store, and hit the bread isle.  Oh, and while I was there I would just grab anything else that was prepackaged, chemically preserved, and easy to stick in the microwave for the evening meal.  Next would be the laundry isle where I would proceed in choosing some sickeningly high priced laundry detergent that only lasted a month.  It also ne

Oh; So I'm a Prepper?

Unbeknownst To Me, I’ve Been Prepping All  My Life!

I am a 46 year old married mother of three wonderful children, living in central Virginia.  Looking back at my life, I believe that I was always a prepper, and just didn’t know it!  From my childhood days in my family home, to my early years as a young professional living in a small town, and on to my current life as an adult living in the country, a frugal and do-it-yourself lifestyle is what I have chosen.

The Secret Prepper

“Hey, let’s watch this!” I said to my husband as I flicked through the channels and landed on the National Geographic Channel’s “Doomsday Preppers”.
“No, that’s not something I want to watch”, he replied with a look of disgust on his face.  My sixteen year-old daughter voiced her agreement.
“Why not?” I asked in utter amazement.

Preparedness is About Listening and Doing

Listen.
This is a world of change. Tomorrow will be different than today, and none of us know how it will be different.  We do not know what we need to prepare for, or what tomorrow brings for us, but there is a guiding force with you that can lead you and send you clue’s.  You just need to just follow your hearts (that soft feeling or knowing) because it is the one thing that you can rely on...meaning the guidance from above and within.
