Prepper Outreach Contest

As a child growing up in the 50s and 60s, my sweetest moments were at my uncle's dairy farm in middle Georgia. The place was very large with multiple barns and a huge farmhouse with a wrap around porch. That porch hosted story telling, family lore, watermelon slicing, ice cream churning and star gazing with my grandparents, aunts, uncles, parents and numerous cousins. In addition to these leisurely pursuits, there was a lifestyle of self reliance. A large family garden supplied all the produce...

A couple of months back my wife called me to watch a new program called "DOOMS DAY PREPPERS."  All she said was just watch it then lets talk, well talk we did.  We have been prepping for over 3 years, my wife is really great at finding wholesale web pages to purchase dry goods in bulk.  She even put together a book (very nice one indeed) for beginners on long-term/short-term storage.  We sold the booklet for $12.95, most profit was just for the printing cost, and the remaining we put into our...

I have dabbled in prepping for a long time but have only recently put forth a serious effort to become truly self-reliant. Several years ago while I was in graduate school I found myself unable to work as much as I had planned and thus without much money.  It was the first time that I realized how wonderful self-reliance is.  I did not have to apply to any government program; I did not get food stamps or any other assistance.  I just walked downstairs, got a #10 can of powdered milk and a box...

Why a self-reliant lifestyle? My mother had always taught us to be frugal.  Always check the sales/clearance racks first when shopping, clean your plate, never do less than a full-load of laundry, cook from scratch, etc. I remember the occasional treat to eat out.  We always ordered water and when we wanted a dessert, we were told, “You don’t need that.”  I despised those words as a child... “You don’t need that.”  Truth is, it’s sort of become my mantra. Is it a need or a want? When...

From the time I was a small girl growing up in Colorado, I knew I wanted to be a mom. So I married, had 2 children of my own, then became divorced. The children grew up and had children of their own, so I adopted 2 disabled children, both girls. One has Aicardi’s Syndrome and the other has Shaken Baby Syndrome. I stay at home to care for both of them and live off of the disability payment they both receive. So saving money is of HIGH importance. That is how my “prepper prepping” began. At first...

The word "prepper" is sure being used a lot lately. Some people think that anyone that is a "prepper" must be crazy. Well, I  can tell you that a "prepper" is someone that is simply preparing for something in the future. Each day we all prepare for something. When we buy groceries for the week, we are preparing for that week. We are being self reliant for that week. So think on a grander scale of things. Say we knew next month that all stores that sold food would be closed. Oh man, what are you...

I have only recently ago began to do A LOT of thinking regarding preparing for things. I read all of the blogs and the info and finally shared my thoughts and concerns with the hubs...and he is surprising on board. We are constantly talking about the things we need and each week and we try to pick up a couple of the little items here and there. I have even just purchased a 10 tray dehydrator and mylar bags and am working on filling them one by one. I also try to buy water every week. We wish...

Anyone who knows me knows I am not a salesman.  That being said I’d like to encourage you to at least consider what I have to say about being prepared for whatever comes our way.  Consider how it may apply to your own situation and make your own plan if you choose to do so.  I was never in a position to be a boy scout but that doesn’t mean I don’t hold their motto close at heart.  I work at utilizing lifestyle skills I learned long ago to enhance our self-sufficiency and improve the quality of...

When I was a young girl around 10, maybe 12, can’t remember back that far, my mother and I were visiting my grandmother and I remember a room she had in her single wide, 2-bedroom mobile home (not a lot of room in those). This was her only extra room. I guess she was a prepper before there were preppers. Anyway this room was absolutely packed, floor to ceiling with bathroom tissue, Kleenex, and napkins. I was told about a time in recent history when paper products were in short supply...she...
