I grew up on a farm in the middle of now where Iowa, my Mom made a trip to the big Warehouse Supper market once ever 3 - 4 months were we would proceed to stock up on supplies.  It was just a way of life. My husband grew up learning to be a survivalist - how to do things the old fashioned way...His Dad believed that if you wanted to build a barn...you go cut down the tree and hand hew the lumber for building...it was just a way of life. Now married  y husband was diagnosed with Cardiomyopathy...

Since I was a young woman in the late 70’s I have been intrigued with “Self Sufficiency”. There were Mother Earth News magazines, a few books on the market and 1 uninteresting book on food storage, I was able to use for resources. During this period and the following recession in the 80’s, I wanted to become a back to lander  I attempted to learn as many skills as I could. I began with sewing, organic gardening, raising chickens and goats. To get through the recession, I begun to bake bread,(...

We moved to our home on 20 acres about 20 years ago. We moved simply because we wanted out of the city, but as I walked around our property on that first day, something spoke to my heart and I “felt” that someday this place would be a refuge.  15 years later, that memory came back to me.  All of a sudden I felt an urgency to prepare.  I wasn’t exactly sure for what, but I knew that I needed to be ready for a melt down of some sort.  For the last 4-5 years I’ve felt as if I were caught up in a...

Okay, so here’s the truth...up until three years ago…no, not so far back….okay, eighteen months ago…it never occurred to me that there was ever any other way to procure a loaf of bread other than to hop in the car, drive seven miles to the nearest grocery store, and hit the bread isle.  Oh, and while I was there I would just grab anything else that was prepackaged, chemically preserved, and easy to stick in the microwave for the evening meal.  Next would be the laundry isle where I would...

Unbeknownst To Me, I’ve Been Prepping All  My Life! I am a 46 year old married mother of three wonderful children, living in central Virginia.  Looking back at my life, I believe that I was always a prepper, and just didn’t know it!  From my childhood days in my family home, to my early years as a young professional living in a small town, and on to my current life as an adult living in the country, a frugal and do-it-yourself lifestyle is what I have chosen. Until recently, I hadn’t heard the...

“Hey, let’s watch this!” I said to my husband as I flicked through the channels and landed on the National Geographic Channel’s “Doomsday Preppers”. “No, that’s not something I want to watch”, he replied with a look of disgust on his face.  My sixteen year-old daughter voiced her agreement. “Why not?” I asked in utter amazement. “Because we don’t want to watch crazy people building bomb shelters and storing food.  That’s just crazy.”  This remark was from my daughter. I reluctantly changed...

Listen. This is a world of change. Tomorrow will be different than today, and none of us know how it will be different.  We do not know what we need to prepare for, or what tomorrow brings for us, but there is a guiding force with you that can lead you and send you clue’s.  You just need to just follow your hearts (that soft feeling or knowing) because it is the one thing that you can rely on...meaning the guidance from above and within. It all started for me as a child. I remember in the 60'...

Thought I might write in length about something that privately has concerned me …concerned not in an alarming or frantic way but more as in a ‘be prepared’ type of way…..yes I’m talking about “Prepping” and working on living a more self-sufficient way of life. My recent Facebook “Page Likes” and my own postings lean towards what some might call “Doomsday Prepping” … well I just want to say I’m not quite at “Doomsday” level but I am concerned with being prepared for the “what if’s?” and in...

I’m A Couponing Prepper & Proud Of It! I began couponing heavily about a year ago. My fiancé was skeptical of the level of savings I was attaining until he went shopping with me and saw that I had saved over half off my bill (and I didn’t have many coupons that time!). More recently I’ve involved my mother in my couponing adventures. She and my father have been prepping, or “collecting” as we call it, for a couple of years now, and I noticed that a lot of the canned and dry goods they...
