by Kellene You might be surprised to learn what is made from corn. Did you know that batteries, diapers, cheese, peanut butter, Coco-cola, Motrin, vanilla extract, baking powder, white vinegar, saccharin, Sweet and Low, charcoal, a slew of household cleaners, drinking alcohol, condiments, toothpaste, dental floss, toilet paper, iodide salt, finger paint, crayons,  and margarine all have corn products in them? This list is in addition to the obvious corn products that you are already no doubt...

Will your pantry shelves mirror the store shelves in an emergency or food shortage? There is a serious food supply emergency going on right now. We don’t have to wait any longer folks. In fact, I would say we are at Level Orange with very little more required to push us to Level Red.  No. I’m not spewing fear and chaos. I’m trying to share information with you laid out in a rational, factual manner so that you can be aware and to take measures to insure that you are affected by this food...

What's for breakfast? by Kellene While growing up, it was always a special surprise if we got to have something other than oatmeal or cold cereal for breakfast. Saturday was our best chance to get something delicious and homemade from the kitchen. Every once in a while my single mother of 5 would surprise us with a special homemade breakfast dish that we would gobble up before the first episode of Abbott and Costello was over. (Yes, I actually quickly did my chores every Saturday so that I...

Conspiracies--Fact or Fiction? photo co corrupt-org by Kellene I’ve probably said this before, but one of my favorite conspiracy bumper stickers of all time says “Just because I’m paranoid doesn’t mean they aren’t after me.” I find that there is a dangerous and debilitating stigma in our international society.  If a proposed theory has anything to do with the fact that a person or group of persons has actually conspired, plotted, and planned to bring about the demise of another person, then...

Having a nice house isn't everything The party was so wonderful. The house was warm with hugs, greetings, and shared tales of joy and heartache from the previous year. So and so had a new baby on the way. The hostess had just received a new customized dining room table so that she could seat her burgeoning family at meal time. A young man had just been honorably advanced in the military. Seeing old friends and making news ones was a great way to start the New Year. So why was I so distraught...

Kind of funny, but I have been asked non-stop this past month what I’ve asked Santa Claus for Christmas.  So, I’m going to tell you. An Aero-Garden- so that I can grow more goodies inside the home. It’s more convenient for me to handle them indoors and I like having more living plants in my home to provide more wonderful oxygen. Molasses- I simply can’t seem to get enough of this stuff and there are so many wonderful goodies I can make with it such as ginger snaps and ginger bread. It’s a bit...

by Kellene I hope that you all are ready for this. Don't panic. Get organized. Make an accounting of what you really have. And fill in your gaps. But please stop delaying it. 2010 Food Shortage Crisis Means Financial Armageddon

Does your food storage look like this? I do hate food storage. I really do. In fact you’ll rarely hear me use those two words together in my home. However, that doesn't mean that you won't find fabulous foods that have a long shelf-life...bear with me here while I share the difference. Why I Hate Food Storage Food storage is 50 pound bags of dusty, weevil-infested wheat, stale rice, and rock hard beans that I would never eat in a million years. Food storage is exploding cans of tomatoes,...

When it comes to making your own cheese from powdered milk, I decided to start off easy today and address cottage cheese making specifically. Perhaps you’re thinking that cottage cheese is simply a luxury that you’ll do without in a survival scenario. Ok. That’s fine if you’d prefer not to indulge in it. But I use it strategically in my home. Cottage Cheese in Recipes Using cottage cheese in dishes makes the dishes taste as if they are full of fat and thus very satisfying—without any of the “...

While the topic may sound a bit “ho hum” I assure you that if you’ve ever made bread—successfully or not—you will benefit from this these vital bread making tips. Last night I took a little “me time” and attended a bread making class. I love to see how other folks do things and I always hope to learn something to “sharpen my saw” along the way as well. I’m happy to say the time spent was well worth my while and a successful addition to my Mental Preparedness aspect. However, while I was...
