Yet Another Reason for Food Independence

I elected today to share this article that was posted in the New York Times today.  It illustrates the presence of several other E-coli strains which are prevalent in our foods today and how the meat industry is resistant in taking any additional responsibility for them.  *sigh*

Interesting to note, as the result of viewing an awful animal cruelty video (actually I simply couldn’t bear to watch the whole thing…I only got 30 seconds of it before my stomach turned and the water works began) I set a hardcore house rule that we would ONLY get our meat from local sources that we knew, firsthand, how the meat was raised, fed, and processed.  That’s the only kind of meat I want sitting in my jars or in my freezer.  I’ll definitely sleep better at night this way.

Excuse Me. Is This Your Worm?

Can you imagine walking along the shores of a fresh water lake, seeing some fossilized algae and saying to yourself, “Hmmmm. I think I’m going to try and eat this?”  Or worse, how about someone who notices that this fossilized algae kills insects and then decides to eat it?  Crazy, huh?  I don’t know how things like Diatomaceous Earth ever get discovered, but I sure am glad they do.

With Diatomaceous earth, you have one of the most wonderful natural remedies for removing all kinds of toxins in your body AND a highly effective remedy at eliminating pesky bugs from your home, garden, and stored grains.  Allow me to take you into the world of Diatomaceous earth today.

For starters, let’s talk about the vital benefits that Diatomaceous earth has on your body. Personally, I drink about 2 teaspoons of it daily in my water bottle.  (I follow that with 2 teaspoons of Redmond Clay in the next water bottle I fill, but that’s another story.) Why? Because like everyone else who is reading this, I have parasites, tapeworms, bacteria, viruses, and toxins in my body.  Diatomaceous earth is HIGHLY effective at completely removing them from your body.  Since we accumulate these kinds of undesirables in our body every day, I’ve incorporated daily doses of DE in my water every day in order to win the long term battle. If you refuse to take DE regularly, at least give small amounts to your pets and cattle every day. I give my small dogs ½ teaspoon daily for maintenance, and a bit more if they ever get an ear infection or are throwing up. They readily eat it and in fact, when I started them on it, it caused one of the dogs to stop getting into the soil of my plants.

How do we get parasites, tape worms, e-coli, etc? Kind of a yucky topic, but let’s put our iron stomachs in for a moment and learn a little bit.  First of all, you can easily get parasites/worms from the foods you eat. For example, if you eat wheat or other whole grains, you are consuming weevils.  It doesn’t matter how often that wheat was cleaned or how much you paid for it, you’ve got weevils. If you consume regular commercial red meat you also have parasites, and most likely some e-coli in your body as well. There are internal and external parasites associated with cattle.  If you eat pork, regardless of how long you cook it, you definitely have parasites and bacteria in your body. The fat in the  pork is made up primarily of the toxins and waste that the pig eats. It’s just a fact of life, folks. Lungworms, which are rampant in the intestines of cattle, cause viral and bacterial pneumonia.  Sushi also houses parasites, salmonella, and a myriad of other bacteria.  The raw fish is the least of my worries.

Secondly, if you have pets such as dogs, cats, hamsters, rabbits, etc. you have parasites as well—that is if you ever pet them, let them sit on you, lick your face, etc. Parasites from pets particularly dwell in your intestines leaching the nutrition that you had otherwise intended for your own body. It is virtually impossible to have pets and not have parasites as a result—unless you use DE in your body and in there’s another story. (I’ll get to that later.)  In fact, just  one kind of internal round worm known as Toxocara, has infected 14 percent of our population according to the CDC. Toxocara comes specifically from dogs and cats. Toxocara is particularly predatory among children. This doesn’t mean that 14 percent of the population has pets. It means that there are sufficient  number of pets in our surroundings. Even those without pets are exposed to parasites that originate from them. Toxocara is easily accessible simply by playing in a sandbox or a playground of dirt or mulch.

Soil is another source of such body invaders. If we work with it in our gardening, we’re going to get it in our bodies.  Hanging out at a farm which uses pesticides and herbicides also brings unwanted toxins in our body.

Unfortunately, water, whether it’s treated by the city or not, is one of the biggest culprits of introducing unwanted bacteria and viruses into our bodies.  In a disaster scenario in which we would have to forage for water, we are likely to consume even more. This is another reason why I’m grateful for the existence of Diatomaceous earth.  Not only can I use it to filter any questionable water, but even if I use other methods, I can also consume the DE regularly to help counteract anything I may have missed in my water filtration or cooking.  DE is a very effective water filter!  All you need to do is take a bucket and drape a tight-knitted cloth on top of the bucket, then a cup or two of DE on top of the fabric in a small mound. Slowly pour the questionable water through the DE into the bucket. Not only will you have drinkable water, but you will also have mineral and vitamin enriched water. This is why I often refer to preparedness as a source of peace in my life as opposed to panic. I can’t help but look at DE and say to myself, “Wow, Heavenly Father. You’re just full of nice little miracles all over the place.” I mean really, a substance that kills unwanted bugs of all kinds, but is good for humans and cattle! Cool!

So, what are the consequences of parasites and other like critters in your body? Blindness, obesity, anemia, frequent headaches, weakened immune system, irregular bowel movements, depression, stunted growth, autism, and even death  (although the benefits are so vast and innumerable that it requires a whole “nother article). That’s just what can happen to humans. Imagine what is taking place inside the animals we love or are trying to raise.  The great thing, though, is that de-worming doesn’t need to be an unpleasant one-time event that you hope you’re doing often enough. Keep your body optimal by paying attention to extracting toxins from your body every day by incorporating DE in your daily regime. After watching a medical video about what parasites can do in my body after only 72 hours, I’m definitely converted to the every day approach. Ugh!  Besides, wouldn’t you rather use an organic method of de-worming you and your pets/cattle etc. instead of nasty chemicals?! I know I would. When I teach about water consumption, I teach that adding flavoring to your water changes the chemical make-up and causes the body to have to work harder to process the water into a distilled state so that it can use it. However, when you’re adding the DE, all you’re adding is organic vitamins and minerals that your body will readily assimilate and not have to work hard to extract from the water.  If you must, you can consume the DE in juice or something else like that, but I have found that I seriously don’t notice the taste in the water at all.  Besides, is there anything that can taste bad enough to prevent me from trying to fight THIS? (yuck alert!)

Let’s leave the parasites alone for just a moment. One of the other assets to DE is that is also absorbs bacteria AND viruses.  Bacteria and viruses are essentially the tiniest of little critters. They are no match for DE’s effectiveness.  The fact that you have something that will absorb and get rid of both in your body is great. Even modern medicine isn’t effective at fighting viruses. One of the reasons why bacteria is no match for DE is because of the vast amount of minerals found in DE. Bacteria simply can NOT survive amidst minerals. (This is why I love using mineral make-up. It doesn’t go bad because of bacteria, because the bacteria can’t survive in minerals. Thus I may pay a bit more for my make-up initially but it lasts me a lot longer.) So the more that minerals make up your organs and blood, the less of a happy home it is for the bad guys trying to infect you.

How can DE kills bugs but not people? It’s all about the water content. Suppose that you needed to thicken 5 gallons of a very brothy soup. You wouldn’t expect to accomplish this using only a ¼ teaspoon of corn starch would you? (For those of you who really don’t know you way around the kitchen, the answer is NO WAY! hee hee) So the benefit in using DE  has to do with the overwhelming amount of water content we have in our bodies as opposed to insects. Insects have very little moisture (contrary to what you may believe when you step on a cockroach), whereas our bodies are made up mostly of water.  This is also why DE doesn’t absorb all of the water that it inevitably grows near.  DE has also been used to help clean up toxins and oil spills.

So, what kind of DE do you need to obtain and where can you get it?  Well, that is the most important question.  You must use only FOOD GRADE DE.  If the manufacturer or seller of the product cannot tell you it’s food grade unequivocally, do not purchase it. For the longest time there were only two kinds of DE, pool grade and food grade. However, in an attempt to avoid paying the FDA the necessary fees to call DE “food grade” some manufacturers have started labeling their DE as “filter grade.”  Again, I implore you to accept no substitutes for FOOD grade DE. While you can do just about everything you want with the other forms of DE such as killing insects, detracting flies, using it in your garden etc. you should not consume any DE that isn’t food grade.  The reason is how it is processed. Just like grains intended for animals should not be consumed by humans due to the regulations that permit chemical additives in order to get more out of the product per package, so too should we humans not consume DE that isn’t labeled as food grade.

You can purchase food grade DE at most health food stores. However, I found that it’s pretty pricey that route. I prefer to get it in larger quantities and save a boat load of money.  I do know that Five Star Preparedness offers DE in two different formats. They offer it in 5 and 10 pound increments that’s simply “food grade” DE. However, for those who want to be extra sure in their internal consumption, they also offer it in as “fossilized phytoplankton powder” (FPP) format.  This is in a 10 ounce jar that runs about $18.00. But I wouldn’t recommend you wasting your money on it since it’s the exact same thing that you can get in the 10 and 20 pound increments,  just with a more friendly “food” label for those who need that kind of reassurance, because for only $25 you can get the 10 pounds (that’s what I use daily). Both are food-grade.  And please don’t buy into the whopper of a lie of a company telling you that the FDA won’t “let” them label their DE food grade. The FDA is all too happy to allow someone to label something food-grade so long as that company pays for the licensing and testing to do so.

I wish that we didn’t need something like DE as a result of our surroundings. But this is just how things are, folks. If it’s there, we get to inhale it, absorb it, or eat it. But I’m sure grateful that there’s a very economical solution out in the world. Yesterday I came across an “emergency preparedness blog” that was alarmingly incorrect. It was a basic topic, but it was addressed in a very misguided manner. The author wrote about what she plans to use in an emergency for her toilet hygiene—rags instead of toilet paper. So as not to risk educating anyone incorrectly, rather than providing a link to the article I will instead provide a few summations of the article which she posted on this national “preppers” site.

First of all, she was a big advocate of NOT using toilet paper during an occasion in which you had to rely on an outhouse, a hole in the ground, or some other such scenario. She labeled such a premise as useless, expensive, and unrealistic.  Instead she offered up a suggestion of using old rags and then storing the “used rages” in a lidded bucket filled with borax, bleach, water and laundry detergent.  She believes that such an option is “more eco-friendly” than toilet paper is.

While I read the article, I could sense the enthusiasm that this person had for sharing her knowledge with the rest of the world. I believe she was also trying to make the alternative solution as easy as possible for others. I certainly don’t believe that she was attempting to mislead anyone. However, I physically cringed while I was reading it, realizing that she was setting up herself and anyone else who bought into her instructions, for a major sanitation problem—even a deadly one.

To understand why planning on using a rag as opposed to TP or another like product, I think I should first point out a few things about feces and urine that some folks may not realize. First of all, sewer treatment employees receive HAZARD PAY because of the danger of their work. In fact, sewer treatment employees receive more “disaster prevention training” annually than police officers do to improve their firearm skills.  In other words, working with urine and feces is not a task to be taken lightly. The hazard in working with sewage isn’t just about the chemicals used to treat the sewers, but it’s also about working with the unavoidable—the waste itself.

Urine contains compounded amounts of toxins, nitrogen, nitrates, and ammonia. As such, it is NOT recommended that it is simply thrown out somewhere uncontained or unprotected.  For those of you who are considering having two containers for solid and liquid waste in a worst case scenario, I beg you to rethink that plan. Solid matter actually needs the liquid to help it break down. Plus, it’s simply not realistic from a physiological standpoint to perfectly separate the two while someone is heeding a call from Mother Nature.  Separating the two compounds will only create more problems which I don’t have room to address in this post.

As urine and feces sit—especially in a heated environment—it develops deadly pathogens, dangerous combinations of microbes, bacteria, and viruses—including the well-known e-coli.  This compound attracts flies which feed on it and then spread it from one location to another. The point being that handling such a compound in any way is not a wise decision.  Staying away from it and disposing of it in all cases is critical.

Let’s also understand that a scenario that’s accompanied by the symptom of limited access toilet comforts that we’re presently used to is indicative of a serious scenario. Think about what would have to take place in order for a rationing of toilet paper to take place. (Other than the toilet paper shortage caused in 1973 by Johnny Carson jokingly telling his audience that there was a TP shortage. As a result, he actually CAUSED a shortage because millions of people cleaned off the shelves of TP that night. *grin*) Perhaps a natural disaster, a financial collapse, or act of war would cause such consequences.  Any of these scenarios would mean that we could no longer take our present state of sanitation for granted. 

One of most important aspects of establishing a society is to provide a community with reliable sanitation solutions. The reason is because poor sanitation can literally kill an entire community within a 50 meter radius in as little as 30 days. Bacteria, disease, and viruses are no respecter of persons, borders, or bank accounts.  Thus preventing the spread of such must be diligently practiced at the root of its origins. If sanitation is not practiced with the utmost of our capabilities during everyday or dire circumstances, then disease and death will speedily run rampant.  Remember disease is not easily curtailed to a specific environment. Disease is no respecter of persons, boundaries, or social positions Keep in mind that due to our easy methods of travel, disease can spread faster than it ever has in history.  That’s a significant statement considering that the Spanish Flu spread to over one-third of the earth in a matter of only three months—this prior to the availability of speedy international travel.

Preparing for alternative sanitation solutions can be practical, comfortable, and realistic.  The use of toilet paper should not be viewed as a luxury that can be easily dismissed.  While we should be aware of alternative options such as corn husks, phone book pages, or newspapers, it’s important that we recognize the need to provide us with a safe distance, minimal exposure, and safe disposal of our hazardous waste. Seaweed is also a good alternative as it’s got healing properties with it as well. The fact of the matter is ALL of these aforementioned alternative options are much safer options for you versus you planning on using rags and cleaning them as you go.

To be blunt, planning on using cloth or rags is not an ideal “plan B.” Just by nature of the rag method you are more prone to come into contact with the fecal matter. The longer it “hangs around,” being stored in buckets, being washed, etc, the more likely that contact is.  Additionally, the rag method requires storage of the fecal covered rags until you wash them. The storage—especially with any heat involved, will compound the hazardous toxins as the bucket of used rags sit. Something else I think we underestimate is that smells, especially unpleasant ones, strongly affect our morale. Unpleasant smells are not simply an affront on the senses. They are also an inhalation of dangerous microbes and airborne bacteria. If you’re storing the used rags, the smell lingers throughout your entire living environment. Instead it should be burned or broken down with something like Chemisan. It would definitely stink (excuse the pun) if you couldn’t enjoy the smells of sautéed garlic and onion because the wafting aroma of the outhouse overpowered it.

Lastly, in order to use rags for this particular hygiene care, most believe they need to use heavy chemicals such as borax or chlorine—neither of which are eco-friendly.  Where can you safely dispose of those chemicals?? If you absolutely HAVE to use rags, consider instead using essential oils to clean the rags with such as lavender, Thieves, and tea tree oil.  Exposing yourself to potential contact with fecal matter is such a bad idea, that even the reusable toilet wipe companies don’t recommend their product for use for anything else except straight urine. Additionally, it requires much more physical energy and water to take care of than does TP. You can never underestimate the importance of conserving physical energy and maintaining as much “normalcy” as possible during a crisis scenario.

On the other side of the debate, toilet paper can easily be broken down or safely disposed of.  It can easily be burned or buried. My favorite method of breaking down fecal matter and TP is the use of Chemisan. Chemisan eliminates a great deal of the smell, deadly pathogens and breaks it down completely in as little as two weeks leaving behind the equivalent of a soil.

Contrary to some opinions, toilet paper does not have to be expensive.  For over a year now, thanks to coupons, I have put my mandatory price point on toilet paper at 25 cents a roll.  I don’t pay any more than that, ever.  But when I get it at that price, I do purchase as much as my budget that week will permit me.  I also use that same strategy on anything else I purchase and bring into my home. I set a price point and stick to it. This means that I don’t have to choose BETWEEN having wheat or toilet paper. I get to have what I and my loved ones need for every anticipated event. Planning well everyday means that you don’t have to choose between one vital necessity and another. Knowing you have all of the bases covered means more mental strength for you to deal with the other aspects of a survival scenario which may test you.

Also as an alternative view of the blog I’m referencing, toilet paper is a multi-purpose product. It’s often used by cost conscious individuals in lieu of facial tissue. It’s also used by some as a source of cooking fuel (along with isopropyl alcohol)—a waste to me considering so many other cooking alternatives, but to each his own. And hey, TP has even been used by the US. Military as camouflage during the Gulf War!

The comfort factor of toilet paper should not be underestimated either.  Promoting familiarity during a crisis scenario is as important as your medical supplies. This is why a survey two years ago revealed that over half of all of the respondents said that they would choose food first, then water, and then toilet paper as their supplies on a deserted island. In other words, it’s more important to peoples psyche and comfort than perhaps this author realized. I suspect more people didn’t mention toilet paper simply because it was off their radar. Perhaps a gorgeous companion and their favorite rock band made the list instead. When there is any kind of an “ick” factor involved, it’s much harder to expect persons to change their habits, even in a survival scenario. Trying to do so will inevitably bring about stress. If you’re using moss and leaves right now everyday, then you won’t have any problem with those items in the future—unless you don’t stock up. Otherwise, having what you’re familiar with for such an inevitable part of life is critical to your mental health.

Bottom line, in the event of true emergency scenario, having ample toilet paper will NOT be the least of your concerns. It falls in line with the Physical and Medical aspects of preparedness which puts it in the position of priority number 3 and 4 out of the Ten Areas of Preparedness.  So, watch for the sales, know how much your family uses in a week, and plan accordingly.

Debunking—Part I

For the last year as I’ve been writing and teaching preparedness full-time, I have received on a rather regular basis, e-mail messages or blog comments questioning the veracity of my information because the reader has found somewhere else where such information was frowned upon, “debunked”, or disputed in some way. I don’t claim to perfect in my knowledge, but I do claim to be perfect in my intention to always provide my readers with information that I have researched, tried, and believed in.  Today’s article is for all of those who have already (or who may in the future) come across “debunkings” of my statements.

For those of you don’t know, I lived in the Philippines for nearly a year and a half. In spite of all of my mental preparedness, it was definitely a culture shock for me. I didn’t get to dwell in the more “city-fide” areas.  I lived, traveled, ate, and communicated out in the boonies. While I was there I was constantly running into counterintuitive “policies.”  For example, when the jeepnies, which are the primary source of public transportation, would travel at night, they would leave their bright lights off until they came upon an oncoming jeepnie. Then they would turn their brights on until the other vehicle had passed them.  Another “tradition” was that it was considered a poor health decision for a woman to take a shower or bathe during her menses each month. These ridiculous notions come from somewhere. Someone in a position of authority started them. Needless to say, I bathed every day of every month and I probably rolled my eyes and chuckled a bit every time I saw the brights go on towards oncoming cars—and then said a silent prayer for safety.

I suspect that most of you are familiar with the tale of the emperor who is convinced that he’s wearing beautiful clothes which only wise men can see. He bought into this story, in part, because of his pride and the fact that he paid an exorbitant amount of money for these “new clothes.”  Not wanting to admit that he couldn’t see the clothes, the emperor paraded around butt naked in his imaginary attire. Only upon hearing a great deal of laughter and scorn from the villagers was he brought to his senses.

Today, we are surrounded with a great many counterintuitive and “emperor’s new clothes” scenarios. For the purpose of today’s article I want to explore the dangers of drinking the Kool-aid and how we can soundly determine fact from fiction.

So, for the first part of this article, today, I’m simply going to point out the dangers that we’re exposed to when we simply follow along as sheep. Tomorrow I’ll address how we can prepare and protect ourselves from being deceived.

While the lucky ones were escaping the death trap of The World Trade Center during the 9/11 attacks, the NY Port Authority (a state agency) was broadcasting over their loudspeakers for everyone to simply stay put! This is just a small example as to why I firmly believe that the existence of our freedom and safety are seriously vulnerable to what authoritative presentations we buy in to.  Call it drinking the Kool-aid, questioning reality; or whatever you will.  We must take the time to research for ourselves. And then we must condition our brain to respond to THAT input rather than the input which may come from the masses.

Our country, and even our world, is ultimately run by individuals. Yes, humans come with amazing talents, wisdom, mental fortitude, and compassion.  Unfortunately though, for every Mother Theresa through the ages, there are countless Hitlers. Now lest you think I’m pessimistic, understand that I am confident in how things turn out. I’ve read the book. I know how it ends. The good guys win, but not without a great deal of trial and travail brought about by the Hitlers of the world.  I believe firmly that in order to ensure your safety and true freedom, I can’t afford to simply take some “authority’s” word that something IS, simply because they say it IS.  Throughout history there have been far too many mistakes which have affected countless lives which prevent me from believing otherwise.

The USDA, which strongly advises against bottling butter, waxing your own cheese, or preserving your eggs in mineral oil And yet this same agency refuses to consider how such products were preserved BEFORE we entered the days of refrigeration.  This is the same government entity that refuses to shut down beef manufacturing plants which repeatedly offend safety guidelines.  The USDA also allows the beef manufacturing industry to label the ammonia which is put in the beef as an e-coli inhibitor as a “processing agent.”  The USDA is also the one that puts out the “food pyramid” as a guide to how much a person should be eating daily and of what types of food. It hasn’t been updated for decades. And yet there are numerous doctors who believe that if you were to stick to eating according to the food pyramid then more disease and sickness would be prevalent in our society because our foods no longer have the same base of nutrients that they did when the food pyramid was first Water and Salt Debunking—Part Icreated. Our soil has been sorely depleted in nutrients. The rampant use of pesticides, herbicides, antibiotics, and other chemicals have a direct affect on our bodies.  One doctor has written three bestselling books on the theory that regardless of what you eat, you won’t receive any nutrients if your body isn’t properly hydrated, and yet the USDA doesn’t say any such thing. (See books by Dr. F. Batmanghelidj) The USDA also has no quantified regulations as to what qualifies as “organic” and thus many products are mislabeled as such. Were you aware that Whole Foods purchases a great deal of their fruits and vegetables from China? China doesn’t have ANY organic checks and balances. Let’s look at our U.S. military authorities. They should be trusted and believed to be protecting the lives of every soldier, right?   There is a high quality body armor available that the U.S military, as a whole, refuses to purchase for their soldiers, in spite of a greater value and evidence of a greater protection of life and vital organs. From what I’ve researched, it’s the very best body armor available to the masses and it’s the only body armor that’s available for civilians. It’s also the only body armor that’s customized to fit a woman and all of her curves.  Yet Dragon Skin has received nothing but criticism from the National Institute of Justice and many military leaders. Why? The truth is that there is a serious financial Dragon skin armor Debunking—Part Iconsequence to retired military officials if they endorse Dragon Skin, as they have accepted cushy retirement jobs from the existing body armor manufactures.  As such, with as much cut throat maneuvers as you would expect from a government conspiracy movie, the NIJ has managed to “debunk” the benefit of Dragon Skin. Well, the NIJ  “debunking” was counter-debunked by a special episode presented by The Discovery Channel’s hit show, Future Weapons. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aYaSRIbPWkM  and http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u_HRQNd84ZA&feature=related) NIJ had so little to go on that they actually refused in court “for reasons of national security” to not reveal what they felt was wrong with Dragon Skin.  Well, in my opinion, a multi-million dollar television show isn’t going to put their neck out “debunking” the NIJ unless they had the legal and physical strength to do so. The videos don’t lie in my opinion.  Neither do the testimonies of countless professionals who have had their life or physical functions saved as a result of Dragon Skin Body Armor. Fortunately, in spite of this brouhaha about the veracity of Dragon Skin, US Presidents and Vice Presidents, Secret Service Agents, Navy Seals, Blackwater contractors, celebrities, Middle East Contractors, members of the U.S. Coast Guard and the Marine Corps as well as diplomatic visitors have all benefitted from the use of Dragon Skin. But hey, the NIJ has “debunked” it—so it must be garbage, right?  Last, but not least, Dragon Skin puts their money where their mouth is by offering a $15,000,000 liability coverage on their product for each owner. (yes, that’s 15 million!)

In the early 1950’s Dr. Ian MacDonald and Dr. Henry Garland were contracted by the FDA to conduct a study on the effects of cigarette smoking. These two doctors came to the conclusion that smoking was a “harmless pastime” which was “unrelated to lung cancer.” Dr. MacDonald was later quoted as saying “A pack a day keeps the doctor away.”  Over a million people have died as a result of that lie.  So, I ask you, were their conclusions accurate “debunking” of the concerns medical researchers had with cigarettes, or was it just plain genocide?

Now, let’s follow these same two doctors on another matter.  The FDA contracted with these same two “professionals” to debunk an alternative treatment for cancer in 1953.  The two doctors paired up to call the treatment of Laetrile as “unconvincing” and “wasteful.”  Thus the FDA has refused to conduct any additional research on this topic and the American Cancer Society treats the topic with scorn. Both entities have refused any further investigation in spite of the obvious scientific errors these two doctors have committed in the past. Well apparently the standings of the FDA, the National Cancer Institute, and the American Cancer Society have been demoted by hundreds of American cancer patients per year. Instead of having cancer patients flee to our shores for the best treatments for cancer, we have hundreds fleeing from our shores to other nations in order to receive effective cancer treatments and even cures. Yet somehow these authorities stick with their commitment to our cancer treatment as it is now, even though the effectiveness of cancer treated through radiation and chemotherapy yields only a 5-10% effectiveness after 30 years of application. The bottom line for this butt-naked charade is all about money. The American Cancer Society MUST claim that their current methods are effective otherwise billions of dollars of funding would dry up.

I could go on and on here with several other examples.  But suffice it to say, “debunking” is usually motivated by money and power in one way or another.  Government and powerful corporate entities have repeatedly shown themselves to be more interested in cover-ups than they are in good ole’ honest coming clean.  So, without becoming hardened pessimists who don’t believe in mankind anymore, what can we do? I’ll address that tomorrow. Till then…don’t drink the Kool-aid just yet.

Food Part IV Nutrition Insurance

So, what do you do when you feel like your food supply isn’t nutritional enough, too expensive, too tenable, and at risk of being in short supply? You take matters into your own hands. 

To me, this is a large reason why I make sure I have a long-lasting amount of food in my pantry at all times. My mind is more aware of these kinds of imminent interruptions and inconveniences to my food acquisition than it is with the possibility of a catastrophic earthquake, which is why I took so much time to present such a case for such everyday possibilities.  Fortunately, we still have a LARGE number of ways to ensure we still stay in control of our food quality and prices.

First of all, to ensure that I get nutritious, vitamin packed, chemical free vegetable nutrition I either grown my own vegetables with heirloom seeds, purchase produce at a Farmer’s market or health food store, or I grow tons of sprouts. 

Something interesting about the produce that I purchase from the health food stores… Lately it hasn’t been much more expensive than the produce offered at the major grocery store chains.  And yet it lasts a LOT longer in my refrigerator.  I suspect that it’s due to a lack of the chemicals which are sprayed on the mainstream produce.

Also, consider using freeze-dried fruits and vegetables on a regular basis. This food is CLEAN. And in order to freeze-dry it properly, it’s picked at its peak.  Pound for pound I’ve found that the freeze-dried food is actually LESS expensive than the produce I purchase at the grocery store. Here’s an example.  The other day, I had to pay $1.89 per pound for fresh, chemical-free cauliflower. I bought about 4 pounds for a total of $7.56. Three days later I noticed that the black spots on my cauliflower had already begun to develop. No problem, I just made sure that I cooked it sooner, rather than later. I cleaned it, chopped it all up and used the entire head of cauliflower in a great casserole dish.  It was way yummy.  Then, I also got a #10 can of freeze-dried cauliflower that I paid $8.59 for.  I used only 1½ cups of the freeze-dried cauliflower for the same scrumptious casserole recipe. I reconstituted it and threw it in the dish.  It was also WAY yummy, and in fact, I felt like the cauliflower taste was a bit more noticeable.  Here’s the best part: no cleaning, and no slicing or dicing AND… I still have plenty more left in the can to do this dish several more times. Of course I’m going to share this recipe with you at the end of this article. J  I may not be able to grow my own banana or pineapple trees. But I can get the fruit freeze dried. I may not be able to get zucchini year round in a garden, but I can get it freeze-dried. I can get green onion, green beans, sweet peas, mushrooms, huckleberries, and so much more all year round, conveniently freeze-dried, economically priced with at least 90% of its original nutrition.  Sounds like a very good alternative to me.

Another option that I use to ensure my nutrition is quality is I sprout.  Sprout, sprout, sprout, sprout, sprout!  I LOVE munching on sprouts. I love to make sprout salads. I love to chop them up and throw them into casseroles and soups.  I love them on sandwiches in lieu of lettuce.  I love to throw them in my smoothies. I love consuming them knowing that they are CLEAN, FRESH, and packed full of more vitamins than virtually anything else I could possibly eat.  I love eating them and knowing that they verge on being a powerful medicinal intake rather than empty calories. Sprouting is a heck of a lot cheaper than buying produce in the store.  And it eliminates the Russian roulette aspect as well. When I sprout, I KNOW what I’m getting.

Then there’s the other obvious solution. Grow your own produce with heirloom seeds. Use diatomaceous earth instead of chemicals to control the pests. Gobble up the produce as it grows or can it in peace knowing that it’s clean and available to you when you need it. While canned foods may only contain 40-50% of your fresh produce nutrition, at least it’s 40-50% of CLEAN food rather than questionable, right?

Now let’s address the meat issue. General market meat runs anywhere from .99 cents a pound on a good day with bits and pieces of parts, all the way up to $5.89 a pound, complete with the chemicals, ammonia, hormones and antibiotics.  The alternatives for this are also readily available.

First of all, I regularly take about a tablespoon of diatomaceous earth daily.  It absorbs e-coli, parasites, pin worms, and even bacteria.  I do that to make up for the questionable meat I may partake of.  That cost me pennies a day, so I consider it worthwhile. I also feed it to my dogs for the same reason. (By the way, if you have pets, you have parasites, so I’d use some DE in my diet for that reason alone.)  NOTE: Only use FOOD-GRADE diatomaceous earth—NOT pool grade!

Next, when feasible, and generously marked on sale, I purchase organic meats. Frankly, this doesn’t happen all that often.  But I take advantage of it when it does.

So my next, and most common step is that I incorporate the use of “wheat meat” in my meals.  The use of wheat meat ensures that I enjoy a hearty, meaty meal void of hormones, e-coli, antibiotics. Can I just tell you that the more I do with “wheat meat” the more in love with it I am?  It’s a GREAT filler. For example, let’s say that I get some of the main market ground beef. Just because I’m using diatomaceous earth, doesn’t mean I want a tummy full of the stuff. So I do a half and half combination between the main market meat and my own homemade wheat meat.  Not only does the wheat meat provide me with a more complete nutritional value at mealtime, but it’s SO much less expensive than even the main market stuff that’s on sale!  The other night I was teaching a class on using wheat. I teach a segment of that class to demonstrate how to make and use wheat meat.  I took about 3 cups of vital wheat gluten, added a dash of salt, pepper, and nutritional yeast. Then I added a wonderful, restaurant quality beef bullion (with NO MSG) and a little bit of the restaurant quality onion seasoning—always void of MSG or hydrogenated oils (see www.fivestarpreparedness.com for these products)  I mixed up the dry ingredients, then added about a cup and a half of water, mixed it by hand until I had formed a glutinous mass, and then baked it in the oven for 25 minutes at 350 degrees. I then put the wheat meat in the food processor to make it more resemble ground beef, and then used it in one of my favorite recipes in which “ground beef” is supposed to be the star of the dish.  HOL-LEE COW it was SO good.  I even converted a few skeptical carnivores to the merits of wheat meat. And yes, I’m giving you the recipe at the end of this article so that you can try it out yourself. The best part about this dish was that it was so darn clean, nutritious, and economical.  (And I ate the leftovers the next two days feeling satisfied for 6+ hours afterwards.) While I enjoy a healthy sized pork roast, sirloin steak, or roasted chicken every once in a while, I’ve got to tell you that I really enjoy the wheat meat and am amazed at how satisfying it is to my body in terms of appetite, fiber, and nutrition.

One other option I want to share with you. I’ve begun using pea protein in some dishes.  It’s a great alternative to the GMO soybeans that are primarily available. Just a tablespoon or two of the mixture can easily go into any soup or casserole dish. I’ve also been experimenting with it and discovered that you can make “patties” out of it and cook it much like you would wheat meat. It’s another great source of protein without all of the baggage.

I hope this all helps you feel more in control of your nutrition, your grocery budget, and your meal times.  We really don’t have to allow the boardrooms to determine our recipes.  And in my opinion, eating like this is definitely one of the better solutions to “health care reform.”

California “Beef” Rice Skillet

 (One of my FAVORITES)

  • 1 to 1 ½ pounds of beef flavored wheat meat, ground or finely chopped*
  • 2 large green bell peppers, seeded and diced
  • 2 large tomatoes, seeded and diced
  • 2 cups of Uncle Bens Converted Brand Rice
  • 4 cups of beef broth
  • 1 teaspoon of dry mustard
  • 1 teaspoon of garlic
  • 1 ½ cups of shredded Monterey Jack Cheese

In a large skillet with a lid, sauté the wheat meat in about a tablespoon of oil and the garlic.

Then add the rice, dry mustard, and the broth to the skillet. Stir. Bring the mixture to a simmer and cover for about 20 minutes, until the rice has cooked.

Add the diced vegetables to the mixture and stir lightly, just enough to incorporate them into the mixture. Top with the cheese. Allow to melt a bit and then serve!

*When preparing this wheat meat, I like to add some Shirley J’s powdered beef bullion, Shirley J’s powdered BBQ sauce, and Shirley J’s Onion Seasoning to the wheat gluten. Then mix it with the liquid, let it bake at 350 for about 20-30 minutes, and then process in the food processor to finely grind it.  I then like to sauté it until it is nice and brown and a bit crispy like ground beef.

White Mac N Cheese Gourmet

By The Preparedness Pro

  • 1½ cups of freeze-dried cauliflower
  • 3 cups of elbow macaroni
  • 2 tablespoons of prepared horseradish
  • 2½ cups of prepared Shirley J’s White Cheddar Sauce*
  • 1 teaspoon of nutmeg
  • 1 clove of garlic, mashed
  • 1 cup of freshly grated parmesan cheese
  • ¼ cup chives or green onions.

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit.

Reconstitute the cauliflower in warm water. Reserve the water. Set aside.

Prepare the macaroni according to manufacturer’s instructions. Drain. Reserve the water. Set aside.

*Prepare your 2 ½ cups of Shirley J’s White Cheddar Sauce according to manufacturer’s directions, using the water from the cauliflower and pasta instead of fresh water.

Warm the White Cheddar sauce in a medium sized saucepan and add the horseradish, nutmeg and garlic.  When warm, add the cauliflower and cooked pasta. Stir gently to incorporate. Transfer to a 9 x 13 casserole dish.  Top with freshly grated parmesan cheese and chives/green onions. (Note, the green onions can be freeze-dried and reconstituted.)

Place the casserole in the oven for 15 minutes, or until the bubbly.

Food Part III: Nutritional Compromise

In the last two segments in this series on Food, I’ve attempted to address our vulnerable reliance on our world’s food supply. When there is a shortage, we pay for it dearly. When a great deal of products are reliant upon one particular crop, we give away much of our freedom as well.  When the core of our habits for feeding and enjoying are based on a particular product, we are also subjected to the price demands which come with such dependence.  I’m sure that many of you remember how difficult it was to adjust our monthly budgets to meet the drastic increase in fuel prices.  Not long after that shock, over 70% of all credit card holders had their minimum payments on their credit cards increase substantially.  Thus far I’ve addressed the availability and the cost of our foods due to our system at present and how our preparedness efforts can counteract such unpleasant realities.  Today, I believe I’m addressing an even more important aspect of food though—it’s compromised nutrition.

I think we’d all like to believe that if we have a clump of broccoli on our plates, that it’s good for us.  We’d also like to assume that if we have a fresh piece of tuna seared to perfection, that it too is beneficial to our body, right?  Unfortunately, in the name of control, technological advances, bigger crop yields, and down right greed, the nutritional content of our food is not all it’s cracked up to be in our minds.

I don’t know if many of my readers will remember this, but there was a time in which the FDA actually said that one cigarette a day was good for you. In fact, they even went so far as to have two DOCTORS make this statement for all of the media to see.  (See “The World Without Cancer” by G. Edward Griffin) Eventually they lowered their tone a bit and simply claimed that cigarettes were not harmful. Regardless of how their tone changed, keep in mind that all along the way, the USDA and the FDA stood by their approval of the use of cigarettes. After all, it was an ideal money maker for all involved.

Unfortunately, it’s true what they say about history repeating itself. Sure there are different characters, altered acts, and varied dollar amounts, but it all boils down to the same plot. Group A (the instigators) has a product that they want to promote in order to save more money, make more money, and produce more product. Group B (the backers) approves the idea. Group C (the cautious) rebel against the idea due to valid concerns. Then Group A and B  hire the sharp legal minds of Group D to keep Group C out of the picture so that they everyone in Group A, B, and D can make money by selling their wares to Group E. (That’s E, for Everyone else.)  Ok. So what realistic A,B, & D showdowns do we have going on right now?

(First of all, here’s a disclaimer.  I do not write this article as an attack on farmers.  It is my opinion that farmers as a whole are the recipients of this corporate shakedown. I do wish, however, that farmers of courage and intelligence could stand united and put a stop to all of this, much like the courageous David against Goliath…)

Ammonia is now added to your poultry and beef in order to help kill the e-coli virus. Wait. How do they get e-coli?  Well, they are raised knee-deep in their own feces, in darkened facilities (to promote docility).  Instead of being raised on the fruits of God’s green earth and sunshine, they are raised on massive amounts of nutritionally deficit fillers in order to substantially increase their yield. Specifically when it comes to chickens, this method enables the industry to grow a chicken twice as big in half of the time! The average chicken farmer spends roughly 20% of their budget on the anti-bacterial ingredients that they feed their chickens! Yup. Kind of freakish, if you ask me. I’ll spare you the details of the consequences of such a Frankensteinian method.  Unfortunately, the filler feed and “housing” conditions cause severe health problems for the flocks and herds which then resorts to the industry regularly injecting their herds with antibiotics.  Did you know that the average person eats 200 pounds of meat per year?!  That’s an awful lot of hormones and antibiotics that we’re putting into our bodies!

During the documentary, “Food Inc.” one of the chicken farmers was interviewed while cleaning his chickens out in an open field. He claims that the USDA attempted to put a halt to his method of cleaning his chickens “out in the open like that” because it was “unsanitary.”  Unsanitary, huh? Yet hormones, antibiotics, ammonia, and feces are perfectly acceptable, eh?  In addition, the farmer states that the way he won his case in this matter was to have his chickens tested by an independent laboratory. Comparing his whole chicken to a standard industrialized chicken from the grocery store, the test concluded that his chicken had only 133 CFU whereas the industrialized chicken had a whomping 3,600 CFU—and THAT was after several chlorine baths! (CFU denotes the count of colonies of microscopic bacteria—“colony forming unit”)

So, question for ya. Do you think that ammonia kills nutrients as well? Ok. That’s your protein source.  Let’s look at your produce.As you know, the bacteria salmonella has been found in tomatoes, peppers, spinach, and lettuce as of late. Why? Well, here’s one reason.  In part, it’s because salmonella is readily found in animal related food products.  When it comes to animal related foods, 4 companies control over 80% of the processing market.  Currently only a small handful of companies actually handle the majority of ALL of our food system. So, if only one company decides to cut corners and not treat the foods being imported from Thailand, India, China, or Egypt and you’ve got a salmonella outbreak in your dog food, Black Angus beef, peanut butter, Little Debbie Snack Cakes, and your table black pepper.  Supposedly, the only CHEAP way to take care of salmonella or other like bacteria is through an irradiation process.  Yes, it’s a form of radiation, much like that used to kill cancer cells. As you know radiation kills ALL of the good and the bad bacteria.  (Not only does irradiation compromise the nutritional content of your foods, but it’s also used on pharmaceutical products. As such, it’s blamed for compromising the effectiveness of many pharmaceutical supplies.)  Yup, Folks. We’ve got nutritional compromise at its best.   On top of that you have pesticides, depleted nutritional content of the soil, and the mandatory use of genetically modified seeds (Note: Monsanto currently OWNS over 90% of all of the soybean seeds used in our crops and actively seeks to SUE/punish the last holdouts for “patent infringement” – in many instances crippling the hold-out heroes by depleting their entire financial worth in the process—(Do an internet search on “Monsanto vs. farmers”)  Here’s another awful truth.  Unless you are a highly vigilant consumer, you eat genetically modified food everyday.  Over 70-75% of all processed foods on our shelves have GMO content. http://www.thetruthaboutgmos.com/index.html (For those of you who aren’t aware of the consequences of GMO foods, check out this medical study http://www.biolsci.org/v05p0706.htm)

Ok. So should we stop buying our produce from manufacturers, and pay the much higher prices for cleaner food? Ouch. Thanks to hyper-inflation, deep recession, fuel increase, I don’t think that my budget can handle much of that. So what about growing my own produce?  Well, that’s great, although there is a fly in that ointment as well. Monsanto has already obtained some legal standing to make it a criminal act to save your seeds so that you can reuse them for chemical and genetic-free food—instead of constantly buying hybrid seeds—this coming from the primary provider of hybrid seeds in the world! http://www.govtrack.us/congress/billtext.xpd?bill=h111-875 Yes. The plot thickens.  As you can see, our daily nutrition intake is unwittingly being determined in the board rooms, not at our dinner tables or even the doctor’s offices.

Unfortunately, addressing it all is making this article WAY too long for one day. So tune in tomorrow for the rest of this piece.  Sorry to leave you hanging in an agitated state.  Allow me to tell you that I do have some sound solutions for you that play a roll in your food preparedness efforts and they are easily done.  It’s a matter of being aware.

Sanitation—When You Gotta Go

While the thought of waste management isn’t sexy or glamorous, I wouldn’t be doing anyone any favors if I didn’t teach about sanitation in greater detail. So here are a few things that you’ve just GOT to know about do-it-yourself sanitation for a prolonged period of time.

Sorry to have to say this, but human waste is a huge danger in a disaster. Many folks will just give up on any semblance of sanitation in desperate circumstances. When I lived in the Philippines, it was nothing to see a woman stop where she was going and crouch down and urinate wherever she stood. It was also common for people to simply throw their human waste out their windows…as if it was now marked as someone else’s problem. Now picture what may happen if someone lives in a high rise apartment in the center of a city not being able to flush their toilets for a week. They aren’t just going to hold it, right? I guarantee that “civilization” as you know it will cease when it comes to waste disposal. But wait. There’s even better news. A person who is healthy and has regular bowel movements produces two to three pints of urine daily and one pound of feces per day. I don’t even want to think about what happens when someone is sick from eating unsafe food, or stressed out. Ugh. And that’s just ONE person.

As shared previously, one small area of poor sanitation can kill everyone within a 50 mile radius. So it’s critical that you’re just as diligent with your sanitation preparedness as you are your food, water, and shelter. How can a bad sanitation area kill so many in such a wide area? The perpetrators are rodents, flies, and bacteria. Bad bacteria can travel three hundred feet from the original site of “yuck.” Flies live to spread feces and such from one place to another. And rodents are attracted to it as well. If they go in, they go out, and they then take the death germs with them. Sounds awful, doesn’t it? So you’ve got be mindful of not creating a festival of killer bacteria in the first place.

There’s quite the cocktail of formidable germs lurking in a human waste area. Streptococcus, staphylococcus, E. coli and shigella bacteria, some salmonella, Norwalk virus, hepatitis A virus, the common cold virus, and various sexually transmitted organisms.

Immediately after a power outage you may still be able to use your sewer system by pouring water directly into the toilet bowl. But this method uses up a lot of valuable water and you run the risk of having sewage in your home when the home system backs up. I wouldn’t recommend living long term that way. Instead, plug the toilet up with a tennis ball to avoid sewage coming out in the event of a blockage. And then set up alternative waste disposal options.

One option is to dig a trench. Your trench should be 2 feet wide, at the very minimum, 1 food deep and four feet long or more. More importantly it should be FAR way from any type of living arrangements—especially FOOD! Since the bacteria can travel 300 feet, you might want to think about having your trench that far way from your living area. After each trench use, cover the area with dirt, lime, wood ash, I-Pee, or ChemiSan. Also, I recommend sprinkling a bit of diatomaceous earth (DE) after each use as it will keep the flies and other insects away, and thus further prevent the spreading of germs. (Note: Human waste should NEVER be used as compost for food gardens.) The downside of digging the trench is that it takes up vital physical energy. Thus some of the simpler methods may be necessary instead.

Another option is to use a 5-gallon bucket with a toilet seat lid. After each use, be sure to layer it with one of the aforementioned items. ChemiSan has biodegradable bags that you can use to line the 5-gallon buckets with. This will enable you to take the bags, bury them and know that you haven’t furthered the contamination in your area. (Check their site to find distributors in your area.) For our readiness, we have lots of heavy duty plastic bags, DE, and lime on hand specifically for this purpose.

Whatever method you use, try to construct a covering/shelter for the area. This isn’t just about dignity and privacy. Germs in feces can be propelled through the air easily. Thus, leaving the waste area immediately after applying the covering of dirt, lime, etc is important. Having some type of a door or at least a plastic sheeting is a good idea as well.

Be sure that everyone is diligent in cleaning their hands for at least 20 seconds after using the facilities. The same goes if you are changing a baby or elderly diaper. Be sure to get in between the fingers and under the fingernails each time you wash your hands. If you’re relegated to using hand-sanitizer, be sure to apply enough to be just as thorough as you would if you had soap and running water.

When disposing of disposable feminine products, they should be burned after use, not put with the other waste in the trench or bucket. The same goes for disposable diapers. However, cloth diapers and their pins should be boiled, then bleached, and then exposed to the sun for a couple of hours. (Do NOT use your solar oven for this sanitation purpose)

And lastly, you may want to invest in room deodorizers now while you can get them frequently for FREE with coupons. While you may not fathom being able to use 6 cans of Febreeze now, you’ll be grateful that you have it when your “community” is forced to take care of business the early 1900’s way.

Yes, you do have a right to be a fanatic. When it comes to war, any war, the winner is always the one who never assumes they are safe. These same tactics must be applied to germ warfare as well.

There just had to be a Part II to my previous article on Germ Warfare. After writing the first article, I kept being mentally nagged by other danger zones I had left out. In some instances, I believe these germ danger zones may be more nefarious than some of those listed in my original article. So read on, and prepare to change some more of your life’s habits.

Soda pop and other canned goods—The other night while I was teaching a class on quarantine/pandemic ironically, a free can of soda pop was offered to everyone in the room. As I watched everyone happily opened their can of pop and drank from it. I on the other hand washed mine at the sink, wiped it off with a sani-wipe and then drank from it—simply because I couldn’t find any straws. Remember, you have absolutely NO idea what rodents the cans were exposed to at their original warehouse, as they were transported, or as they were housed at the retailer you purchased them from. Hanta virus is still a viable concern even if you have no rodents in your own home.

Steering wheel—Even if I avoid the fact that many people have questionable hygiene habits when they are in their own little world in their car, the fact of the matter is, you don’t exactly turn your head away from your steering wheel when you sneeze, cough, etc. Your steering wheel gets the brunt of all that nature expels from your mouth and nose. PLEASE be sure to clean it off regularly with sani-wipes. (If you haven’t picked up on it yet, manufacturers of sani-wipes may be a hot stock pick right about now. :) )

Get your drinks WITHOUT ice—I know that’s unfathomable to most of you. But here’s an eye opening statistic. You have a 70% chance of having MORE e-coli (which comes from feces) in your ice than is in the toilet from the same restaurant, airline, hotel, etc. Yes! Not just a 70% chance of finding e-coli there. But a 70% chance that your ice will be MORE contaminated than the toilet water! Studies showed that the number of stars a restaurant or hotel had made no difference in the quality of water in most cases. E-coli is introduced into the water by the water source used to make the ice, bare hands used to load the ice (instead of the scoop) and the fact that the lines to the ice machines are virtually NEVER cleaned out. 

Lemon wedges—avoid them in your drinks. I loathe the taste of tap water but I simply mask the taste by requesting a lemon wedge. Alas, I won’t be doing that any more. Lemon wedges have a 77% chance of being contaminated with e-coli, staph infection, or a myriad of other infectious bacteria. The only good thing you’ve got going for you is the fact that lemon juice is a natural anti-bacterial and disinfectant agent. *whew* Lemons are usually put into your drinks by bare hands despite the fact that they’re supposed to be handled with gloves. However, most restaurants leave it up to the servers to put them in your drinks. Having them placed on your dinner plates should be safe though as that’s usually done by a food handler in the kitchen.

Gas pumps—If I had to give an award for the LEAST amount of cleaning on a public item ever, gas pumps would win hands down. Think about it. When have you EVER seen someone clean those? When you pump your gas, use a paper towel that the station usually has on hand or at least sanitize the heck out of your hands before you touch ANYTHING else—including your keys.

Last but not least is a stern word of warning about playgrounds. Those bouncy houses that your kids play in NEVER get sanitized. They get vacuumed sometimes, but never fully cleaned. The ones containing the bouncy balls are a cesspool of germs of the grossest kinds. When have you ever seen a school janitor clean the chains on the swings or the bars on the monkey bars or the handles on the teeter totters? How about the playground equipment such as balls, jump ropes, etc? It’s imperative that you teach your kids to SANITIZE their hands after recess or after using such equipment on any occasion.

Bottom line, you have EVERY right to be fanatical about your health care. This is your life we’re talking about here. You MUST be in a heightened state of awareness in order to prevent you and your family from getting unnecessarily ill. One touch is all it takes folks, so be mindful. You wouldn’t take your kid down a dark alley in the middle of the city at 3:00 a.m. Making contact with e-coli or the Hanta virus or the H1N1 virus isn’t any less of a gamble. So start putting the odds in your favor. This is called germ warfare for a reason. Position yourself to win every battle.
